Another Grand Champion Might Do Some Hollerin

BBQ competitions are a thrilling blend of skill, camaraderie, and friendly rivalry. Each event is a unique experience, filled with challenges and triumphs that shape the journey of every pitmaster. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in one such exhilarating contest in Ashland, Mississippi, and the outcome was nothing short of spectacular.
Overcoming Early Challenges at the Competition
Our adventure began with a few unexpected hurdles. Arriving late due to truck troubles meant we had to scramble to get our setup ready. To add to the chaos, our designated area was infested with fire ants, and the power breakers were malfunctioning, causing disruptions for all teams. Such challenges often test the mettle of competitors, but perseverance is key in BBQ.
Despite these setbacks, we embraced the chaos and focused on what mattered: the competition. BBQ is as much about resilience as it is about technique, and the ability to adapt is crucial for success. As we say in the BBQ community, sometimes you just have to roll with the punches!
A Unique Competition Experience
One of the most challenging aspects of this particular contest was the lack of nearby accommodations. Typically, my teammate Waylon and I share nighttime shifts to catch a few hours of sleep. However, this time, not only was there no hotel within a 30-minute drive, but we also had no access to a shower. The result? A long stretch of 27 to 28 hours without rest, leading to a rather grueling but memorable experience.
The camaraderie among BBQ teams is a highlight of these events. Even with the challenges, the shared passion for BBQ unites us, and the stories exchanged during the competition are often as satisfying as the food we prepare.
Strong Competition and Memorable Wins
This competition in Ashland attracted a total of 38 teams, each showcasing their unique styles and secret recipes. The competition was fierce, with notable teams like River City Rub and Kinney’s Kountry Kookers participating. Here’s a brief overview of some standout teams:
- River City Rub: Secured 3rd place with their signature flavors.
- Kinney’s Kountry Kookers: Took home the reserve champion title.
- Heavenly Manna BBQ: Known for their exceptional brisket.
- DoRag Q: A fan favorite with their pulled pork.
- Bar-B-Q 101: Impressive techniques and flavors.
- Fire Dancer BBQ: Renowned for their spicy sauces.
Among the other competitors, I must highlight the achievement of the Sultan’s of Smoke. This was their inaugural BBQ contest, and they impressively secured 5th place in the chicken category, earning themselves some well-deserved recognition. Their enthusiasm and talent suggest they’ll be back in the competition scene soon!
Celebrating Success: The Grand Champion Win
Despite the rocky start and the challenges faced, we emerged victorious, claiming the title of Grand Champion. This win was not just a testament to our hard work and dedication but also a reminder of the joy that comes from competing in BBQ. Every victory in this field is sweetened by the memories created along the way.
Winning a Grand Championship is an exhilarating experience. It serves as a validation of the countless hours spent perfecting recipes and honing skills. The thrill of hearing our name announced as champions is an unforgettable moment that every pitmaster dreams of.
