Exploring the Goat Days BBQ Contest

Recently, the vibrant town of Millington, TN, hosted the renowned International Goat Days Festival, a celebration that has become synonymous with quality barbecue and lively competition. This marked the second time I participated in this contest, and I am already looking forward to returning next year. The festival not only included a barbecue contest but also featured a fun Cabrito cooking contest and a colorful goat parade, showcasing the local culture and culinary creativity.

Events like this are a melting pot of flavors, skills, and personalities, making it an exciting experience for everyone involved. The added challenge of unexpected weather conditions, such as a sudden drop in temperature and rain, pushes competitors to adapt quickly while maintaining the quality of their barbecue.

The Role of Judges in BBQ Competitions

Judging at barbecue contests is a meticulous process, and this event featured a KCBS judge who was working towards her Master Judge certification. Having a seasoned judge cooking alongside us provided invaluable insights into the nuances of barbecue preparation and presentation. The judges evaluate various criteria, including taste, texture, and appearance, which are crucial for scoring teams during competitions.

In addition, we had the pleasure of being next to Diva Q, a well-known personality in the barbecue community, who brought her own film crew to document the experience. This connection not only elevated the contest’s profile but also provided an opportunity for competitors to learn from her expertise.

Weather Challenges and Their Impact on BBQ

Barbecue competitions can be unpredictable, and this particular event was no exception. A storm hit the area, leading to a significant drop in temperatures overnight. While cooler weather might seem beneficial for outdoor cooking, it presented challenges for maintaining the right smoking temperatures. Competitors had to constantly monitor their smokers, adjusting their techniques to combat the fluctuating conditions.

  • Temperature Control: Essential for cooking meats properly.
  • Adaptability: Competitors must be ready to alter their plans on the fly.
  • Equipment Reliability: Ensuring smokers function optimally despite the weather.

Such challenges are common in outdoor cooking events, adding an extra layer of excitement and unpredictability to the competition.

Competition Results and Future Plans

Despite the weather-related difficulties, our team performed admirably, securing a top 10 finish in every category and an overall 4th place. While the goal is always to take home the Grand Champion title, such results are commendable and reflect the hard work and dedication that goes into barbecue preparation.

Looking ahead, our next stop is the Smoke On The Water KCBS contest in Pine Bluff, AR. Originally, we had intended to compete in the Smokin’ Aces MBN contest in Tunica, a favorite of mine with significant payouts. However, with the prestigious Royal contest approaching, we decided to use Pine Bluff as an opportunity to fine-tune our skills and strategies for the bigger competition.

The Significance of Community in Barbecue Culture

Barbecue is more than just a cooking method; it’s a cultural phenomenon that fosters community relationships. Events like the Goat Days BBQ Contest bring people together, allowing them to share tips, techniques, and, most importantly, their love for barbecue. From backyard enthusiasts to professional competitors, everyone has a place in this vibrant community.

  • Networking: Competitors form friendships that often lead to collaboration and sharing of techniques.
  • Learning Opportunities: Newcomers can gain insights from seasoned pitmasters.
  • Family Atmosphere: Many competitors see barbecue contests as family events, involving children and spouses.

What to Expect at a BBQ Contest

For those unfamiliar with barbecue competitions, attending one can be an eye-opening experience. Here’s what you can typically expect:
